Buckingham town

Buckingham is the historic county town, wrapped in a loop of the River Great Ouse, and the housing reflects a long history of being rebuilt. The centre around Market Hill and the Old Gaol was largely reconstructed after the fire of 1725, so the town core is Georgian in character and sits within a conservation area — timber sash and casement windows, and glazing work that has to respect what is there. Move out from the centre and it changes completely: post-war housing, the estates that went up as the town expanded, and newer development around the edges and out towards the University of Buckingham, almost all of it in UPVC that is now old enough for the hinges, handles and sealed units to be reaching the end of their lives.

That mix is why we do not lead with replacement. A great many Buckingham windows have decades left in the frame and simply need the ironmongery or the glass sorting out.

Villages north and west of Buckingham

North of the town the lanes run up past Chackmore towards Stowe, where the National Trust landscape gardens and Stowe School dominate the parish, and on through Akeley and Leckhampstead. West along the Great Ouse are Radclive, Water Stratford, Westbury and Shalstone, and the A421 runs out through Tingewick towards Brackley. This is limestone country on the edge of the Northamptonshire uplands, and the villages are a mixture of stone cottages, farmhouses and small pockets of later infill housing.

Practically, that means two very different jobs in the same lane: sealed unit and frame work on the modern houses, and more careful re-glazing where a window sits in an older stone or timber opening that will not tolerate being levered about.

Villages south and east of Buckingham

South east of Buckingham the A413 runs down through Padbury towards Winslow, with Thornborough and its medieval bridge over the brook off to the east, and the Claydons — Steeple Claydon, Middle Claydon and Claydon House — out across the clay vale. Further east lie Nash, Whaddon, Beachampton and Thornton, closer to the Milton Keynes fringe than to Buckingham but still very much rural.

Many of these villages grew significantly in the seventies and eighties, which puts a lot of the local housing stock squarely in the age range where original double glazing has started blowing and the first generation of UPVC frames is now on its second or third set of hinges.

Winslow and the wider towns

Winslow, seven miles or so south east down the A413, is a small market town with a Georgian core of its own and Winslow Hall on its edge, and it has grown noticeably since the reopening of its railway station brought new housing with it. West of Buckingham, Brackley sits over the Northamptonshire border with its long market-town high street, and Silverstone beyond it is best known for the circuit. Towcester stands on the old Roman road that became Watling Street and is now the A5, which runs on north east past Potterspury and Old Stratford towards Stony Stratford — the coaching town on the same road, famous for the Cock and the Bull — and into the western edge of Milton Keynes at Wolverton.

These towns are all within a comfortable run of Buckingham, and it is common to pick up several jobs in one of them on the same trip. If you are in one of these and have a window that needs looking at, it is worth mentioning any others in the household or the street when you ring.

Questions about our coverage

Where we go, and how far.

How far from Buckingham will you travel for a window repair?

Roughly a fifteen mile radius of Buckingham as a rule of thumb, which takes in the MK18 villages, Winslow, Brackley, Towcester, Silverstone, Stony Stratford and the western side of Milton Keynes.

Beyond that it depends on the size of the job. Ring 07765 923817 with your postcode and you will get a straight answer rather than being strung along.

Do you cover villages as well as the towns?

Yes — the villages are a good part of the work. Rural properties around Buckingham are often the ones least well served by the bigger glazing firms.

Older village housing also tends to have exactly the kind of ageing UPVC and timber frames that repair well rather than needing replacing.

Can you do several properties for a landlord in one visit?

Where the properties are reasonably close together, yes, and it usually works out better value than booking them separately.

Tell us the addresses and what needs doing at each when you first ring, so the visit can be planned around access and any parts that need ordering first.

Not sure if you are in our area?

Ring with your postcode and you will get a straight yes or no, along with a price for the work if you are.
